Learn Cyrillic App Released

This is an app I've been working in my freetime for a bit. It helps you to learn the Cyrillic alphabet as the first step towards learning a language using them. For now the app supports only Ukrainian but I'll be adding more later.

Mentions 2.0

Hey everyone,

I just pushed publish for Mentions 2.0. This update fully revamps the UI and ads tablet support (finally!). While the UI is still far from perfect I think it is much better than the one before. I hope I'll have time to do some tweaking to the details screens as they're pretty ugly. I'm also aware that error handling isn't really top notch and in the tablet UI the selected item doesn't get highlighted in the list.

Unfortunately, my time for building this app is very limited but I hope this update is still a step to better.

I do need to note that I've dropped support for older Android versions and the app only runs on Android 4.0+. This is simply a compromise I had to make due to the limited time available.

You can download the app from Google Play store.

Issues with Google+ search

If you're using the app you might have noticed that the Google+ results aren't very good. Unfortunately that is an issue with the API. It does not seem to return the same results you would get by using the web and searching G+. I hope we'll see some announcements and new APIs for G+ in the upcoming IO and I'll look into this issue after the event.

Another issue with the current G+ API is that it limits requests to 10k per day with my API key. The app doesn't have that many users yet that it would be a problem but it might at some point. If we hit the limit it means that it stops returning any result. I hope to find a solution to this asap.

Mentions bumped to 1.1

I needed a timeout with my writing so I decided finally implement in-app billing to remove ads in the Mentions app. While in-app billing is pretty overwhelming once I read a bit from the documentation and googled around I found this helpful open source library that creates a helpful wrapper interface around the Google's API:

Thanks to Robot Media for creating and open sourcing it!

I also updated almost all libraries that are used in the project. On top of that I tweaked the UI visuals a bit and hopefully made it a bit more pleasing visually.

Mentions 1.0.1

Finally got around to push a minor update to the Mentions app. I tweaked action bar visuals a bit to make it more Androidish (removed gradient, simpler icon). Other fixes include more tolerant setup process and tweaks on back stack. Tapping notifications should no-longer cause new activities to be started if one exists already.

Mentions Graduates from Beta

I just pushed Mentions version 1.0 to the Android Market.

New in this version:

  • Google+ support
  • Visual improvements
  • Activity stack tweaks
  • Bug fixes
  • Ads

I have some plans for the next release but no time frame yet. Plannet features include:
  • In-app purchase to disable ads
  • Adding Facebook as a source (need to look at the API). I might include this as premium ie. paid feature if it has no problems.
  • Still trying to find a good translation engine to provide translations to tweets with different language.
  • Enable optional twitter login to allow more detailed queries (for example user follower count).
Is there something you'd like to see in the next version?

New Visuals for Mentions

I just pushed a new version of the Mentions to the market. This version brings new visuals. The app is finally starting to look OK.

Now as the app is starting to be fairly stable and isn't embarrassingly ugly anymore it could be time to think about the next version and features. I think I'll proceed with smaller incremental features at first. I'll keep on adding more information to tweets and reddit before thinking about new sources or supporting multiple domain searches.
